The wrong fitting in a corrosive gas line isn't a cost-saving decision. It's a maintenance liability that compounds over time.
The Problem with "Good Enough"
A cylinder changeout technician swaps gas cylinders on the same connection point — fifty times over two years. The fitting is a VCO. Each time, the metal sealing surfaces make direct contact. No gasket. No replaceable wear component. Just the fitting itself, loaded and unloaded, fifty times.
By cycle forty, there are microscopic scratches on the cone face. Helium leak detection reads clean — below instrument threshold. But the line carries WF6. Six months later, there's a process excursion. The root cause takes three days to trace back to that fitting.
The fix would have cost one VCR gasket and thirty seconds of technician time.
How They Actually Seal
Both VCR and VCO are face-seal fittings — they don't rely on thread engagement for the seal. But the mechanism is fundamentally different.

The critical difference: in a VCR connection, the gasket absorbs all the wear. The precision-machined sealing faces on the male and female bodies are never in direct contact. You can disassemble and reassemble a VCR connection hundreds of times — provided a new gasket is installed each time and sealing faces are inspected for damage — and the fitting bodies remain undamaged.
In a VCO connection, the sealing faces are the fitting. Every assembly cycle loads them directly. Scratches, debris, or misalignment during makeup don't damage a replaceable part — they damage the fitting permanently.
The One Question That Decides Everything
Before specifying either fitting, answer this:
How many times will this connection be broken over its service life?
If the answer is zero or one — fixed instrumentation, permanent process lines, connections that will never be touched after initial commissioning — VCO is a legitimate choice. Lower cost, adequate performance, no consumables.
If the answer is more than once — cylinder interfaces, filter housings with scheduled PM, any component that gets swapped during maintenance — use VCR. The cost of the gaskets is trivial compared to the cost of replacing a fitting body with a scratched seal face, or worse, a leak event in a corrosive gas system.
Four Situations Where VCR Is Non-Negotiable
1. Cylinder and source connections
Any point where a pressurized source gets connected and disconnected belongs on VCR. Cylinder changeout is the obvious case. Even "low-frequency" swaps — quarterly cylinder changes on a specialty gas line — accumulate enough cycles over equipment lifetime to damage VCO seal faces.
2. Corrosive gas service (HF, Cl₂, WF₆, HCl, NF₃)
In corrosive gas lines, a leak isn't a maintenance event — it's a safety and contamination event. VCR's replaceable gasket means you can inspect and service the connection without introducing risk to the sealing faces. More importantly, if you suspect a leak, you replace the gasket and retest. With VCO, a suspected leak on a scratched face means fitting replacement.
3. High-pressure service above 3,300 psi
VCO pressure ratings are approximately half those of equivalent VCR sizes. For high-pressure applications — cylinder manifolds, pressure testing lines, high-pressure delivery systems — VCR is the only qualified option.
4. Connections requiring documented leak qualification
When helium leak test records are part of your process qualification or equipment handoff package, VCR connections are easier to defend. The gasket replacement protocol is well-defined and traceable. A VCO connection with questionable seal face condition introduces ambiguity into your qualification records.
Where VCO Makes Sense
VCO has a legitimate role in fixed installations with inert or mildly reactive gases. Instrument taps, pressure transmitter connections, fixed mid-run connections in nitrogen or argon lines — applications where the fitting will be assembled once and not touched again. In these cases, VCO's lower cost and slightly simpler assembly are real advantages.
The mistake isn't using VCO. The mistake is using VCO in applications designed for VCR.
Gasket Material: 316L Stainless Steel vs. Nickel
For most applications, 316L stainless steel gaskets are the correct choice. They're compatible with the majority of specialty gases, cost-effective, and widely available.
Switch to nickel gaskets when the process gas is aggressive toward 316L stainless steel — primarily halogen-containing gases: HF, Cl₂, HCl, F₂, and their mixtures. Nickel offers significantly better corrosion resistance in these services. If you're unsure, check the gas supplier's material compatibility data — it will specify gasket material requirements.
One practical note: nickel gaskets are softer than 316L and require slightly less torque to achieve a proper seal. Don't apply the same makeup torque across both materials.
Common Mistakes in the Field
- Using VCO at cylinder interfaces to save cost. The gasket cost difference between VCR and VCO is negligible against the cost of a fitting replacement or a process excursion.
- Reusing VCR gaskets. A used gasket has already plastically deformed to one specific pair of sealing faces. Reuse introduces leak risk. Gaskets are single-use.
- Overtorquing VCO connections. More torque does not improve the seal on a damaged face. It accelerates the damage.
- Misaligned VCO makeup. VCO requires careful face alignment before tightening. Eccentric loading during makeup creates arc-shaped scratches that permanently compromise the seal.
Bottom Line
VCR and VCO are not interchangeable. They solve different problems. VCR is for connections that will be broken — its gasket absorbs the wear so the fitting doesn't have to. VCO is for connections that won't.
If you're specifying a UHP gas system and aren't sure which to use at a given connection point, the answer is almost always VCR. The cost difference is small. The failure mode difference is not.
